Artsplosure 2023

This piece was a broadcast spot for a local arts festival. It was inspired by the mid-century cartoon style of the 60’s. I storyboarded and motion boarded this piece under the style direction of my coworker, who was one of 3 animators on the spot.

I was responsible for storyboarding the ad and designing all motion boards in the style of my fellow animator. The initial style was chosen by the clients from a series of 3 different approaches, one of which I designed. Ultimately they went with the more dynamic and graphic style—and I’m so glad!

I keyframed, or motion boarded the video for animators. There were many shots that were continuous and required deeper thought when creating the frames. The style, devised by one of the animators on staff, is based on a more retro, MCM cartoon feel. It was my responsibility to translate 2 frames into a style language for the piece. It was also necessary for characters to retain their distinct features, while only being silhouettes.

Every part of the video was storyboarded and designed to look essentially the same. We had a limited amount of time to execute the project and doing it this way saved our animators. I’m pretty quick. In total there are around 50 boards for this video.
